On Friday, December 9, AmCham Shanghai’s Business Council for Sustainability and Responsibility hosted a seminar on promoting sustainability within in company. The seminar was part of the Executive Dialogue series and featured six experts in sustainability, including the President of Metro China, Jeroen de Groot and Director of the Economics and Trade Department at the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Frank Yin. Metro, a founding member of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), has been in China since 1996 and has a long history of leadership in sustainability. De Groot spoke about Metro’s accomplishments over this time and how to achieve sustainability in three phases: a focus on energy saving, engaging employees, suppliers, and customers, and finally embedding sustainability into a company’s DNA. Metro’s success in this realm has been demonstrated by their rise to become the highest ranking German FIE in China in terms of sustainability performance rating.
Yin’s presentation focused on low-carbon development in Shanghai. He outlined three stages of environmental management and five modes of green enterprise management, as well as provided an overview of Shanghai’s goals and achievements regarding carbon reduction.
Following the two presenters, a panel discussion ensued. Moderated by Jianzhong Lu, Global Partner at Brunswick Group, panelists included Shi Min, Chief of International Cooperation at the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, Jasmine Tian, Sustainability Director of Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea, Yang Yaning, owner of Hong Kong Key Point Capital Investment Group, and De Groot. The panelists fielded questions about supply chain traceability, engaging relevant stakeholders, private-government cooperation, and government policies toward sustainability.
The final component of the event consisted of a breakout discussion session where the featured experts formed small groups with audience members for more intimate conversation. Key themes that emerged were engagement, traceability and standards, and building measurement systems.
